HOW I KEEP MY COOL IN THE MORNING RUSH

Now that school is back in session, I'm having to readjust my morning routine to make things as stress free as possible with two kids. Where as I used to be able to take my time and get ready at my leisure... I now have to get all three of us, dressed and ready for the day by 8:00 am. Which, is a huge struggle, because I am NOT a morning person. So, I've developed a little routine that has been helping me get through the morning rush without screaming at the kids or losing my mind. And I thought, "Hey, most everyone hates mornings... why not share your knowledge?!" So... here you go.

STEP 1: PREPERATION

My morning routine, little no time, low stress

Ideally, I want to go to bed at a decent hour. But, that truthfully doesn't happen much. So, even on nights that I'm up late blogging or Netflix binging, I force myself to get as much prepared for the next day as possible. And I really mean no matter how late I'm up. There have been nights when I didn't finish work until 1 or 2. But I still made myself do the prep work for the morning before heading to bed. My rationality is this... I'm always going to be exhausted in the morning. Whether I got 8 or 3 hours of sleep. So I just eat those extra few minutes of sleep I miss at night and reap the benefits of a more relaxing morning ahead.

I typically prep by packing all of our lunches, laying out everyone's clothes. And preparing my breakfast & coffee for the next morning.

This means, all I have to do when I wake up is get dressed and eat. And I'm out the door.

STEP 2: FIND BREAKFAST ITEMS THAT ARE FAST AND DELICIOUS

So, for me... taking the time to decide what I feel like eating and then getting the energy to make it happen can take up a few minutes. So, I make these decisions the night before, instead of during the morning race.

On Sunday, I fill a large carafe with this illy Cold Brewed Coffee. Then, in the mornings, I simply pour myself a cup of iced coffee and add sweetener or milk. No need to wait on the coffee machine to do it's thing.

I also, love to eat overnight oats for my breakfast, because they are super fast, but much healthier than prepackaged food.

OVERNIGHT OATS
  • Before bed, combine equal parts rolled oats and your milk of choice ( I like unsweetened vanilla almond milk.)
  • Stir in your sweetener. I always reach for Stevia.
  • Add whatever fruit, nuts you like best in your oats.
  • Refrigerate overnight and wake up to a cool and refreshing meal that goes great with an iced coffee.

STEP 3: BE THE FIRST AWAKE
I've been setting my alarm early enough to give myself 15 to thirty minutes of alone time every morning. I typically use this time to mentally prepare for the day. I love to take a quick hot bath while reading or listening to Sermons, I've missed on our church's podcast. I find that this helps to set the tone for my day and gets me going on the right foot with my family when they wake up.

STEP 4: GET THE KIDS READY FIRST
I try to get the kids ready as soon as they wake up. This way, I don't have to scream and yell at someone to find their shoes or brush their teeth when I'm ready to run out the door. I make sure they are completely dressed, groomed and have food and some sort of morning entertainment on hand before I even begin on myself.

I've found that this method, helps me manage my time better, because I tend to get carried away with my makeup and lose track of time. So, I save myself for last. And set an alarm for when it's time to walk out the door. And at this point, everything and everyone is ready to go!

  5. For me the biggest part about keeping my cool is recognizing before hand what my triggers are. It is great to have a morning routine and to plan ahead to avoid loosing it. Personally I used to get myself ready before even waking up the kids. Then I could focus on moving them along and walk out the door. We all have to figure out what works best for us!
